The Most Hardcore Races From Around The World

There are so many incredible athletes in the world that normal races tend to become boring for them. This is why so many hardcore races have developed so that these athletes can test their mettle in the most intense way possible. From triathlons to marathons to all kinds of grueling events, there are a lot of races that would force racers to take their physical fitness to the highest level. Listed below are some of the most brutal races that runners participate in every year:

  • The Brutal: The name is quite appropriate for a race of this magnitude. A triathlon, the Brutal involves an almost five mile long swim followed by a bicycle race that is well over two hundred miles long. If this weren’t enough, the bike ride is followed by a fifty mile long run. It is safe to say that the people that participate in this race are incredibly fit and represent the athletic elite. This race is so grueling that even being able to finish it is considered quite a feat, and of course the winner is lauded as a true great.
  • The Barkley Marathons: Founded by Gary Cantrell in 1986, this 100 mile long marathon goes through some truly dangerous terrain in Frozen Head State Park, or at least that is the course that the rumors identify. The real course is a mystery, as is everything else about this race. No one even knows how to apply, you need to have the right connections, which is why only a few people apply every year, and out of these people only 60 people are allowed to compete. Out of the hundreds of people that have competed only sixteen have ever been able to complete the race at all within the 60 hour time limit that is enforced.
  • The Patagonia Expedition: This race is possibly the most adventurous on this list. The course goes through all kinds of terrain, from icy rivers to glaciers to mountains spanning hundreds of miles. Some courses involve mountain climbing and biking as well, and the most exciting thing is that the course changes every time. Hence, old participants have no advice they can give to new participants, which makes the race a mystery for anyone that is going to compete in it in any given year.
  • The Marathons de Sable: This is a hundred and fifty mile marathon, and what makes it particularly notable is the fact that it stretches through the Sahara desert itself. Not only is the Sahara desert incredibly hot, there is a lot of wind that contains coarse sand in it, something that makes it even more difficult for participants to get through it. As a result of these conditions, few people attempt this race at all, but those that do claim that it is one of the best marathons they have ever participated in in their life.
